October 22 and 23, Seton Hill University (SHU) is having its second annual Homecoming weekend. This year’s theme is Red, White and SHU, because of the election year.
Homecoming is one of the biggest events at SHU. There is a committee of ten faculty and staff that work over the summer on planning homecoming weekend. Student input is considered for the activities, but due to the timing, the majority of the planning is done by the faculty. The band is scheduled at least a semester in advance.
I think homecoming is a great time to have fun with your fellow students, said Jimmy Pirlo, sophomore.
This year will be the first time that SHU is going to have a King and Queen: Lady Liberty and Uncle Sam. All clubs and organizations recieved a letter to sponsor a team for this competition. The contest will take place Friday night in Cecilian Hall, and the winners will be announced at the concert in between the acts. This is a beauty competition spoof and will include fashion, talent, and interview portions. Clubs can enter as many teams as they wish, and are allowed to team up with other organizations.
With Midnight Run as it’s opening act, the Povertyneck Hillbillies concert is the main event this year. The concert starts at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday night, and will be going until about 11:00 p.m. After the show, the band is going to have a meet-and-greet time. Tickets are free for students, and are being sold to the public for fifteen dollars. The concert is going to be holding up to 1,000 people and will be held on Sullivan Lawn.
Povertyneck Hillbillies have played for the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown and Saint Francis University. They headlined at the National Association of Campus Activities Conference, in addition to playing a record-setting performance at the Fayette County Fairgrounds.
Their single, Mr. Right Now, has also been in the top one hundred of the Country Billboards. According to Jamie Steel, SHU has been receiving a lot of phone calls about the band.
Other activities include: House on Haunted Hill III, mentalist Chris Carter, a meet-and-greet with the football team, a soccer game, a trip to Ligonier, a showing of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Casino Night, and Sing and Ring, just to name a few.
