With the winter season closing in at Seton Hill University (SHU), fall sports such as men and women’s golf, have wrapped up their fall seasons, and are preparing for the spring. The men’s golf team, which is coached by Dan McCarty with an addition of some new talent, made many strides this year.
�I think the team did very well this year. We had our best showing in school history in the Allegheny College tournament, as we finished fourth, just two strokes away from second. We also started the season strong with a good showing at our tournament in West Virginia,� said Stephen Zewe, junior.
The men’s team looks like it’s being steered in the right direction by McCarty with the combined talent of new and veteran players. �The men are showing signs of improvement this fall. The team is being led by Dante Ciolfi, Landon Etchings, Steve Zewe, and Nate Arvay. These guys are playing steady golf and will be prepared for the spring season, which will include the conference tournament,� said McCarty.
The players are looking forward to the spring season and are looking to exceed all
goals.
�Our team this year has big expectations. We should bring home the first golf title for Seton Hill this year, and we all feel that we have a good chance for Nationals,� said Etching, junior.
The women’s golf teamed, coached by Paul Dominic, despite losing a captain to graduation, and with only five competing members, which include one freshman,
have competed in the fall 2004 season.
Players like Lisa Hollick, sophomore, and Ashley Welker, junior, led SHU to a fourth place finish at the AMC/Region IX Championships.
Both Walker and Hollick were named AMC 1st Team. Junior Katie Geis was named to 2nd team.
McCarty said that the golf department was very happy with the play of both the men and women’s teams this fall season.
�The women made a change this year and played their conference tournament too, this fall. The women finished fourth in the conference and represented SHU extremely well,� said McCarty.
As far as next year goes, players like Ashley Winch, junior, are worried about the women’s team’s future at SHU.
�Next year we will not be able to afford to recruit new players because of lack of scholarships due to football and our team maybe cut. We are working through this right now and are hoping for the best,� said Winch.
