There is plenty of good news coming from The Seton Hill University (SHU) dance club. The first official meeting of the semester was held on Friday, September 7 in St. Mary’s Hall. Plans for the dance club were in progress during spring 2006. By spring 2007 approximately 10 members were learning various choreography techniques weekly.

At the September 7 meeting there were almost 20 students in attendance. The club is advised by Tamara
Swank, with Rachel Battaglia from the SHU Dance Academy helping out with choreography. The president of the dance club is Jessica Florian, a junior.
Practices will be held on Fridays from 3:30-5 p.m. The club is open to both female and male students and no prior experience is required. They are open to anyone “Willing to learn and have fun,” said Florian.
Among the students at the meeting were Amanda Habovick and Christina McClosky, both freshmen.
“I just wanted to get involved and have danced before so this seemed fun,” said Habovick.
“I’ve danced since I was five and wanted to get involved,” McClosky said.
“As far as my personal background in dance – I don’t have one. It’s just something I do for fun,” said Sarah Slates, a junior.
In regard to competitions, it might take a few more years before the entire team can compete. However, during the next year some of the more advanced dancers may be able to compete. These competitions have brackets in which dancers compete within certain age groups.
The first dance club performance will be held during Night on Haunted Hill, where the club will be working with the Make-A-Wish club and dancing to “Thriller” by Michael Jackson.
Depending on how the first performance goes, the team may begin performing with the pep band at basketball games. The dance club hopes for great success in the future.
