You’ve never seen a film like “Sucker Punch.” It’s as simple as that and as complicated as the human mind, an intriguing conundrum in its own right that will quite possibly blow your mind away.

“Reality is a prison…Your mind can set you free.” These words in the official “Sucker Punch” trailer paint the ultimate description of this film. Meet Baby Doll (Emily Browning) a girl who’s lost everything she had in the world to death and the scheming of her stepfather. Locked away in an institution for the criminally insane, she has exactly five days to plan and execute her escape. If she does not make it to freedom by then, she will undergo a lobotomy set up by her stepfather so that she will never be able to inform the police of what he has done.

But how can a young woman trapped in a hostile environment realistically hope to break out of a prison? The only way is to supplement Baby Doll’s reality with a world of her own making, a world in which she has the power to set herself free.

Baby Doll’s imagination takes viewers on a wild ride through fantastical settings featuring creative enemies. Chief amongst these are an Asian temple with massive samurai soldiers, steam punk-like Nazis in the trenches of Wold War II and a deadly fire breathing dragon in a castle to rival all castles. Overcoming each of these obstacles enables Baby Doll to eventually gather the four main components necessary for her escape: a map, fire, a knife and a key from the “real” prison ward.

Of course, Baby Doll does not accomplish all of these tasks by herself. In her battle for freedom Baby Doll is joined by Sweet Pea (Abbie Cornish), Rocket (Jena Malone), Blondie (Vanessa Hudgens) and Amber (Jamie Chung). Together these five femme fatales set their gazes on escaping their caged life in the imaginative world with guns, swords and heavy weaponry.

However, as “Sucker Punch” brilliantly pulls you deeper into the girls’ desperate bid for survival, you may find yourself re-envisioning the world around you and the part you play in that world.

The final message of this film zeros in on the fact that each of us has all of the weapons and items that we will ever need to fight the injustice of the world, to better ourselves and to help the people around us become more than they ever thought possible. Most of all, “Sucker Punch” will leave you with the knowledge that everyone’s story, whether real or imaginary, will one day be told by someone.

Helping to tell the story of Baby Doll and her friends are Dr. Vera Gorski (Carla Gugino), the prison’s psychologist, Blue Jones (Oscar Isaac), the head orderly, a Wise Man (Scott Glenn) and the Doctor/High Roller (Jon Hamm) that is scheduled to perform Baby Doll’s lobotomy. Without the strong performances of these characters, “Sucker Punch” would not have been as challenging to viewers as it is.
