The Seton Hill women’s track team won their first conference championship this past Saturday at the title meet at Wheeling Jesuit. They finished the event with a team score of 179.75, twenty points ahead of second place finisher WV Wesleyan.
In addition to the team’s success, head coach Tim Creamer was named WVIAC Women’s Track & Field Coach of the Year, and senior Erin Beattie was awarded meet MVP.
Some of the top Griffin women on the track Saturday included senior Anna Cote, who set a meet record in the 5,000m with a time of 18:12.04; freshman Creanna Conley-Martin, who finished third in the 400m and senior Stephanie Isacco, who set a new school record in the 800m run with a time of 2:18.70. The 4×100 relay team of Ashton Walton, Melissa Segraves, Nina Gladysiewski and Chelsea Cavanaugh finished first, setting a new school record with a time of 48.66. Also, Cavanaugh, Conely- Martin, Ruggeri and Isacco set a 4×400 relay record of 3:56.
On the field, senior Erin Beattie won the triple jump with a distance of 11.6, and sophomore Calsie Boyd was second in the high jump. Tiffani Boyd also came in second in the discus to clench the Griffin’s victory.
The Griffin women were not favored to win going into the conference championships, but they remained confident and were able to make their mark to cap off the season. “We were definitely the underdogs going in,” said freshman Creanna Conley-Martin, “but as a team we were all confident in our ability to perform at a high level and come out on top.”
