Library develops new resources

Seton Hill University (SHU) recently implemented various new changes into Reeves Library.

Amongst these new developments is a collection of over 1,300 DVDs, many of which are multi-disc sets.  The films were donated by John Michael Atherton, associate professor of philosophy.

Adam Pellman, the cataloging and acquisitions librarian at SHU, expressed his delight: “We’re excited, and we hope everybody else is too.  The DVD collection is really my big thing.”

Pellman was an integral part of merging the new DVDs into the library’s already existing selection.

In addition to a wide variety of new films, the library has also updated its technologies.

A new screen listing fines and other basic library information was installed at the front desk.

There are quick response (QR) codes on each of the library shelves in the main stacks.  By scanning these codes with an iPad, students can access hyperlinks to research guides for specific areas of study.  Because each shelf is a different subject area, the shelves take you to the research guide for that specific subject.

“For me, it’s kind of hard to find books on dietetics, so the iPad scanners really help with finding titles in the stacks,” said sophomore library aide Lisa Brouwer.

Online sites in connection with the library are also new.  Amongst these sites is Reeve’s Help, a 24 hour a day help site.  The site features tutorials on a range of topics including a general introduction, policies, database usage, finding journals, and searching the catalogue.  Several subject specific research guides are also available, and new guides will progressively be added.

The eBrary is also a new feature that Reeves is promoting.  It is an online collection of over 50,000 ebooks.  Users can browse by subject area, create personal bookshelves of potential interests, add notes, and personalize multiple bookshelves to correspond with different classes and projects.

New plans are already being developed to advance Reeves Library even further.  Adam Pellman described hopes for future plans.

“We’re currently pushing for a new library system, which means the online catalogue for resources would change with the addition of a new system.  It will have a sleeker look and be more user friendly.  It’s something that everybody can look forward to,” said Pellman.

Further information on the library and its change can be found through the blog on the library website through Griffin’s Lair.
