CareerWorks changes direction and title

The center formally known as CareerWorks has changed its title to the Career and Professional Development Center (CPDC). They have also revamped their services and have hired a new counselor.

The CPDC name change hopes to “reflect the strategic direction of the office,” according to director Renee Starek. She also noted that some employers were unclear on its previous name and purpose.

The center offers many services including major and career exploration advice, resume training, interview preparation and networking tips.

“LinkedIn is a fairly new networking site that’s great for graduates and career professionals,” Starek said.  “We can help students set up an account and walk them through the basics.” They can also take professional photos for such websites.

To assist with new services, the CPDC has hired Heidi Schuman as a career counselor. She will work with students of all majors, including those who are undecided.

Schuman will not work directly with business majors though. The CPDC is in the stages of hiring an employer-relation coordinator that will work with business majors and other students. The coordinator will also actively work to find internship and job opportunities for the students and alumni.

Schuman comes to Seton Hill University (SHU) after working at the University of Pittsburgh main campus and Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA where she got her Master’s Degree. It was the “small, liberal arts university with connections with students and faculty” that brought her to SHU.

“I fell in love with the field while working on my masters and knew I wanted to help students who were trying to figure out their career path,” Schuman said.

CPDC also has opened their revamped recruiting package—Seton Hill Career Network. Here, current students and alumni can log on to find internship and job opportunities, post resumes to employers and seek career advice.  This can be accessed at cpdp.setonhill.edu. “It’s a lifetime service—any Seton Hill student, former or current, can benefit from this,” Starek said.

In addition, they are also launching a Candid Center that will feature online videos for various career choices. “It helps the students get a feel of what their profession might be like—it’s kind of like a ‘day in the life’ experience,” Schuman said.

“We wanted the SHU community to be able to take advantage of their new technology. Now, they can access us from their iPads and MacBooks—It’s a great step for us,” Starek said.

The CPDC offices are located on the third floor of the Administration Building, rooms 302 and 303. Schuman’s office is room 306. You can access their office hours and appointments by visiting their website.
