Intramural sports acquires new coordinator

Seton Hill University (SHU) has hired a graduate assistant coordinator for the budding intramural sports program.

Miranda Peto, 22, met with incoming students during move-in day to determine their interests. Some of the games advertised were corn hole, Frisbee and flag football.

“There was a lot of interest in Quidditch! I’m anxious to see how it goes,” said Peto. “It’s a great opportunity for everyone on campus, not just the athletes. It gives everyone a chance to shine.”

Peto was hired after sports management professor Robert Zullo searched for an intramural expert. “She’s the perfect fit for this campus—everything we’ve hoped for,” said Zullo.

Peto obtained her degree at Alvernia College in Reading, PA while playing Field Hockey and Softball. It was there that she determined she wanted to work in higher education with event planning, organizing and college athletics. She now commutes from Jeanette and will be seeking her master’s degree in sports management while at SHU.

“I’m a bit of a health nut and love to exercise and play sports so pursuing this for the benefit of students is perfect,” said Peto.

In addition to sports, Peto will also arrange campus parties to watch the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pirates and Penguin’s games. “I see now that Pittsburgh people take their sports teams very seriously—hopefully this will fuel their pride,” said Peto.

Part of Zullo’s goal for the campus recreation is to support United Way, a national non-profit organization that raises funds and support for individuals and families in need. This year, 50 percent of all registration proceeds will go towards the Westmoreland County chapter of United Way.

“This is a fantastic way to give back to the community. United Way doesn’t just feed the hungry—it honestly gives back to every branch of the community that needs help,” said Peto.

As the semester progresses and events are planned, information and details can be found on their Facebook page, “SHU Intramurals & Campus Recreation” and their Twitter “@SHUintramurals.”

“It’s honestly all about coming out to meet new people, have fun, get some exercise and relax,” said Peto.
