“A Better High” educates students on substance abuse

Seton Hill University (SHU) Prevention Services hosted “A Better High” on Sept. 22, featuring speaker, psychologist and comedian Matt Bellace.

Bellace, who has a Ph.D. in clinical psychology, led the workshop, educating students about substance use/abuse, protective factors for alcohol use and the effects of drugs on the body.

Bellace, a member of the National Speakers Association and the author of the book “A Better High,” has been a youth motivational speaker and stand-up comedian since 1995. He mixes scientific facts with humor during his presentations to create an informative and entertaining program.

“My background in neuroscience and emotional memory is not lost during my presentations. It helps me understand my audiences better and I know if they’re laughing, they’re listening” said Bellace on his professional website.

Bellace’s “How to Get High Naturally” program encourages over a hundred thousand students per year to seek natural highs by pursuing fun and exciting activities without having to take drugs or alcohol.  Activities recommended by Bellace include socializing, exercise, spending time in nature, and doing volunteer work.

A workshop entitled “A Better High” Part 2 will take place September 25 from 7-8p.m, presented by Alyssa Iannamorelli-Eddy. This workshop is an option for Connections students looking to fulfill their First-Year Student Programming. Students should bring their student I.D.s in order to receive class credit for attendance.
