As 2016 reaches its end and 2017 is right around the corner, the new year will bring many changes into our lives. One of the biggest aspects that we will see unfold before our very eyes is the induction of our 45th president: Donald Trump.

With the election now over, America waits with anticipation to see what her new president has in store. No matter who won, it goes without saying that the political landscape of the United States would have been changed forever. What does this mean for the average American citizen however? What makes Trump’s victory stand out within the country’s political realm?

One of the biggest reasons Trump’s victory is so eye-catching is because of his background before he ran for president. Typically in U.S. elections, candidates would have came from either political or military backgrounds.

One does not see this type of history from Trump, however. He has come from a primarily business-oriented background; one by the likes of which this country has not seen since 1940. During this time, the Republican Party nominated Wendell Willkie as their candidate of choice.

Like Trump, Willkie had no previous political or military history, but he was instead chosen due to his strong business record. Now that his victory is sealed, Trump is the very first U.S. president to not come from any military or political background.

In addition to being the first president of this upbringing, Trump is also the first one in eighty years to be strictly anti-free trade. The last president to openly speak out against free trade was Herbert Hoover in 1932. It can be considered exceptionally rare to see that a president from such a business-oriented background would dare challenge the actions of vast international corporations.

Trump has spoken out against the Trans-Pacific-Partnership (TPP) and the dangers it would impose upon middle and working class Americans. This particular trade agreement would bring with it policies that would cripple small businesses, outsource numerous jobs, as well as limit online speech rights. With his presidency, the American citizen may see more jobs be available thanks to the condemnation of such economically-draining trade agreements.

We are living in a time that will be spoken of for years to come. During these next four years, we will see history unfold before our very eyes. Trump promises to bring a strong economy, countless jobs and a strong sense of solidarity to The United States of America. It will be up to us as American citizens to see if Trump lives up to these promises and expectations.
