Women’s softball comes out swinging

The Seton Hill University (SHU) women’s softball team currently holds an overall record of 4-5 and their season has only just begun. This season the team will play over 20 games and face many tough opponents, some of which include Tiffin University, Ursuline College and Ohio Dominican University.
In preparation for the challenging schedule ahead, the women played four games over the spring break, which they spent in Orlando, Florida. Sophomore infielder, Sarah Tollison believes that spending spring break together on a trip really benefited the team’s cohesiveness.

I think that over the trip we all got a lot closer. We knew that we were there to work hard, but at the same time we all had fun. It’s a good bonding experience and a great way to start the season off right, said Tollison.
According to Jamie Clark, a junior outfielder, the team’s current record can be attributed to hard work during practices and a new team mentality this season.
This year has been completely different for us so far. There has been a big improvement in the team spirit and effort of each player ever since Coach Cymmerman came to the program. Before we were never reaping the fruits of out labor, said Clark.
Head coach Laura Cymmerman joined the SHU athletic staff in January 2006 after the former coaches left the program entirely. Cymmerman has worked at several colleges and began her coaching career as a graduate assistant at Bethany College in 2000. She later became the assistant coach at Campbell University in 2001 and then went on to hold the head coach position at St. Francis University from 2002-2004.
It is great to be coaching such a group of dedicated young women, said Cymmeran.
Along with a positive mentality on the field, another strength that the women have is that they return their entire team from last season.
The returning all conference players include second team outfielder Holly Thomas, a sophomore, and second team utility player Brittany Patton, a junior.
Sophomore Meredith Benson and junior Heather Patton were also named to the team as honorable mention nominees.
New additions to the team this season include DenaMarie Ercolani, Erika Yates, Stephanie Gerber and Kate Summerhill – all promising freshmen prospects according to Cymmerman.
