Found cartridges heighten student safety awareness

On February 15, the Setonian campus police blotter revealed two incidents involving the discovery of a 9 mm cartridge and a .357 Magnum cartridge on campus. While reports were filed for these specific incidents, they are still under investigation.

On February 15, the Setonian campus police blotter revealed two incidents involving the discovery of a 9 mm cartridge and a .357 Magnum cartridge on campus. While reports were filed for these specific incidents, they are still under investigation.
Though the campus here at Seton Hill University (SHU) is generally non-threatening to most of the students living in its residence halls, students have recently become more aware of their safety here on campus.
Students walking around with weapons on campus, the thought is a possibility and dark reality of college life.
While incidents of college shootings have been seen in the news in recent years, some would say that smaller schools would probably not have issues with students and weapons.
Weapons and firearms are prohibited on campus at SHU. The weapons policy states,
Any person found to possess firearms/weapons is subject to disciplinary action.
What is considered a weapon? Weapons include knives with blades over three inches, paintball guns, air rifles, sling shots, BB guns and brass knuckles to name a few.
Richard Gable, a junior, is a resident assistant (RA) on third floor of Farrell Hall and has learned procedures for what to do if a student has a weapon or is rumored to have a weapon.
If someone came to me and said that they heard that a resident had a weapon, the first thing would be to write a communication report depending on what kind of weapon it was, said Gable.
If it was a knife of some kind, I would write a communication report on it. If it was a gun or something else I would have to call campus security immediately, Gable added.
If a student hears a rumor that someone has a weapon, such as a large knife or a gun, that person should immediately be reported to campus security.
Especially if it’s a gun because I would be jeopardizing the safety of residents, if it is a rumor, it’s something that should be taken seriously, said Gable.
Students all throughout the campus have had strong reactions to last month’s police blotter.
Honestly, if there are students with guns on campus it is really alarming to me, said Brenton Wedel, a sophomore.
Other students, such as Amanda Clontz, a sophomore, question their safety.
We live on campus and were supposed to feel safe. This is supposed to be our second home, said Clontz.
And finally, some students are certain that immediate action after the cartridge discoveries is necessary.
Campus police should have the Greensburg police come in and help investigate since they were actual gun cartridges, said George Brattina, a junior.
Look at other college incidents, students can’thave guns on campus, said Jordon Wedel, a junior
They can’treally search every student who comes in the dining hall, but you obviously have to do something because this isn’tsomething minor, said David Todd, a freshman.
It just opens student’s eyes a little bit, said Brenton Wedel.
