Last year Hal Sparks invaded our hallways, our computers, and even our bathrooms. This year it is the hyperbolized VH1 show, “Best Week Ever” that has, in fact, lasted longer than a week here at Seton Hill University (SHU).
Each year Homecoming is marked by one big standout performance such as a band or comedians. SHU continues with the theme of comedy by having stars of the VH1 “Best Week Ever” perform on Friday, October 5.
“After the success of Hal Sparks we wanted to do something along the same lines,” said Tom Donovan, the Graduate Assistant for the Office of Student Activities and Commuter Life, on why SHU chose another comedy routine for the Homecoming performance.
“It was one of the few shows that fit for the university and offered name recognition,” Donovan added.
Students also agree that the event will bring recognition to SHU. “I’m excited because SHU is a tiny school and for something as big as VH1 to come gives us notoriety,” said senior Amanda Gallagher.
The Student Activities Council (SAC) proposed several other choices for Homecoming, such as a Comedy Central Special performance and a show by the final members of “Last Comic Standing”.
According to Donovan, students were polled for what they wanted to see and “Best Week Ever” came out on top.
The increasingly popular television show features a group of comedians who comment on popular culture events weekly on VH1. The format will be recreated at SHU by a panel of four comedians: Chuck Nice, Mike Britt, John Mulaney, and Laurie Kilmartin. Frequent viewers of the show will recognize the comedians, who are regulars on “Best Week Ever.”
Not all students are familiar with the program, however.
“I’ve never heard of them before. I don’t have cable!” said sophomore Katie Milligan.
Regardless, the show is anticipated to be a success, due to the popularity of comedians on campus as well as the big name recognition it brings to SHU.
Catch “Best Week Ever” in Cecilian Hall at 8:30pm. Tickets are $5 for SHU students and $12 for outside guests.
