SHU takes the day on

In honor of Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream, students of Seton Hill University (SHU) participated in “Take the Day On,” serving the community off the hill. The theme for this year’s service day was “the dream; past, present and future.”

“The philosophy of this day is to keep the dream and to make a difference in the community,” said Cindy Boland, the head of campus ministry at SHU.

“Take the Day On” took place on Saturday, February 2 and groups of students and faculty traveled to nine different locations to perform their act of community service.

Maggie Jones, a sophomore, picked up trash and litter with the Westmoreland Cleanways along the side of Mount Thor road behind Caritas Christi. “I was glad I was able to do my share to make this area a cleaner place,” said Jones.

The women’s softball team did the community service as a group, but teammate Jones said, “I felt it was a good deed to do something for the community of Seton Hill.”

“I think it’s very important for SHU to help the community because it’s a way to give back to a community that has given so much to the school,” said Jones.

She added, “Everyone, whether it’s Seton Hill, or any other school, should always try to help out in their own community to make it just an overall better place to be apart of.”

Nicole Edwards, a junior, worked at the Christian Laymen Store helping with their food pantry and testing products to sell. She said, “It’s always good to reach out to the community and to help those in need.”

“All the little things people do add up to bigger things consequently making the world a better place,” said Edwards.
