Angela Palumbo is a sophomore, outside right midfielder for the Women’s Soccer team at Seton Hill University (SHU) and pushes herself everyday on and off the field to be successful.
Last year, Palumbo recorded 3 goals and 2 assists while being one of the only freshmen to play in all 20 games.
This year, she has become a great asset to the team as she steps up her game and takes on a leadership position in the team to encourage and motivate her other teammates to do their best.
“The competition is a lot stronger than it has been in the past, and it is definitely a challenge. I think the challenge is good though because we are growing as a team because of it,” said Palumbo.
“This year, we’ve battled some injuries but still managed to do well. We’ve beat a few really good teams and we’ve lost a few close ones. Our hard work is paying off because we have made the
playoffs.”
Though Palumbo and her team have done great on the field this season, with a record of 7-7-1, all athletes know that it is not always easy to maintain good grades in the classroom while focusing on your sport. “It is very difficult to get all my work done and do soccer at the same time. Many times after practice or games I do my work, shower and go to bed. There is little time for much else while we are in season,” said Palumbo.
But even through the struggles of being a student-athlete, Palumbo is grateful for her experiences on the field. “My favorite part [of the team] is the people that I have met. There are a lot of different people that I would have not had the opportunity to meet if it weren’t for the soccer team. Some are English majors, some are dietetics, some biology, we have a little bit of everything,” said
Palumbo.
“I would like to see the team be even more encouraging. It really helps when you are on the field to get positive feedback. It would also be nice if we could get a few fans in the stands. People need to show their school spirit and attend some of our games,” said Palumbo.
And with three more games on the schedule this season, two of them being at home, the SHU community has a great opportunity to show that school spirit and support for the team that has already made it so far in the season.
“We wanted to make the playoffs this year. I’ve been doing my best [in my position] to assist in the offense and defense,” said Palumbo.
Palumbo and her teammates have achieved their goal of making the playoffs during their first run in the NCAA division.
