Homecoming weekend is awaited anxiously every year by students, faculty, and even parents. Homecoming is the time for everyone to join together, to show their true colors, to show their school spirit and pride for Seton Hill University (SHU), to support the university’s teams, as well as its community.
Homecoming is a big tradition that everyone enjoys. Teams get together and fight to the finish to defend their school pride while students not involved with sports team up against each other to support school activities. There is so much to do, and so much fun to have.
“Homecoming weekend shows the spirit of the past alumni and future alumni, and the rich tradition that goes with them,” said junior Mark Rhine.
Homecoming gives the freshmen a fresh look at the school, the spirit, and all the amazing things SHU has to offer. It gives the upper class-men the chance to look back and remember all the fun and excitement, school spirit and pride, and to enjoy what time they have left at SHU.
Every year, SHU plans activities and events of all kinds. These are for everyone to join and enjoy themselves. This year, SHU has even more in store.
“I’m really looking forward to the football game. It always turns out to be a great game,” said junior Dan Grosso.
Festivities start Thursday, Sept. 24. Thursday is the pep rally at 7 p.m. outside of Mckenna, as well as King and Queen of the Hill. Friday, Sept. 25, dress in school colors and have the most school spirit and win prizes!
Also, William Black, archivist adjunct instructor, will be giving free campus lantern tours at 7 p.m.. Not to mention Jason Bishop, illusionist, who will be visiting SHU and performing many tricks. “I saw his show once before, and it will make people leave in awe, from all he can do” said Rhine.
Saturday, Sept. 26, SHU-A-THON will be sponsoring a 5K walk/run to benefit the Children’s Institute of Pittsburgh. At 11 a.m. there will be a storybook brunch where you can eat with Disney characters such as Cinderella, Snow White, Tinker Bell, Dorothy, and more.
Later, down at the CDC circle, there will be a farmer’s market and wing cook off where you can buy, produce or sample wings from local vendors. There will also be music and a dunk tank. Proceeds go to Student Ambassadors (SHUSA).
At 3:30 p.m., at the Greensburg Salem middle school, SHU will be kicking off their first annual parade, which will feature many different floats, pep bands and king and queen of the hill. Tailgating for the football game will start at 4 p.m., there will also be a Griffin Car Decorating contest. Kickoff for the game is at 6 p.m., where SHU will go up against West Virginia Wesleyan at Offut Field.
Sunday, Sept. 27, SHU Alumni will be playing baseball team in a 9-inning game. The all-campus fair begins at noon where there will be inflatable games and more. There will be an art exhibit at this time as well. At 1 p.m., the 2nd annual Regatta will be taking place at the pool in Sully. At 2 p.m. families will get the chance to take a tour of the new Seton Hill Performing Arts Center (SHUPAC). A Steelers party will begin at 4 p.m.
“Although this is not my first college Homecoming, I am excited for all the events along with the football game, and our lacrosse team is running in the 5K” said freshmen Hannah Nagowski.
There is so much to do, things to see, games to watch. So dress in school colors, show some spirit and enjoy Homecoming weekend 2009.
