With summer just around the corner, it’s time to lose those extra pounds gained over the cold winter months. However, sometimes getting active and dragging yourself to the gym are not easy tasks.

According to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) a great way to get motivated is through music. In an article from October 2008, the BBC published, “A study has confirmed what many gym users already knew—listening to music can boost your capacity for exercise.”

Angela Palumbo, a junior member of Seton Hill University’s (SHU) Women’s Soccer Team said, “When I exercise I like to listen to music, because I really, really hate to run. Listening to songs helps motivate me not to give up.”

Costas Karageorghis, from Brunel University, the doctor who did the study published in the BBC, found that listening to pop or rock music increased endurance by an average of 15 percent.

Palumbo explained how music increases her endurance: “It helps me not think about how tired I am. It gives me something else to occupy my mind.”

Sophomore Mary Rose Dimmey said, “Whether I listen to music or not, I usually end up doing the same amount of exercise, but I end up burning less calories without the music to motivate me.”

According to Karageorghis, not just any music will do though. He said, “The best songs for moderate to intense exercise tend to have between 120 and 140 beats a minute.”

For Palumbo this means listening to Eminem’s song, “Till I Collapse.”

“It’s my favorite workout song. It has a great beat and tells me not to give up,” she said.

For senior Kalie Mills this means rap or hip-hop, specifically Lil Wayne. Mills said, “Without the music, my exercising doesn’t last very long.”
