Seton Hill University’s (SHU) women’s field hockey team opened their season with a 3-2 win against American International Thursday at Offutt Field. This kind of start is exactly what head coach Whitney Harness had in mind.
“We expect to work hard and come in first or second in the [Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference] West,” Harness said. “This is our first year competing in the PSAC and we are the youngest team in our conference. We know there will be many challenges ahead of us but we will ready to overcome all.”
Two of SHU’s goals came from Allegra Ramos, the lone senior on the roster. Ramos, who was selected to the second team all-American last year by womensfieldhockey.com, is a player Harness says fans should keep an eye on.
Along with Ramos, sophomore forward Heather Apodaca and junior defender Kinsey McKenrick are standouts on the team. Apodaca “will be looking to score” while McKenrick “will be looking to shut down any offense the opposing team will be bringing.”
Those opponents are all the same to Harness and her team. “We look forward to playing everyone. Its a different game with every team we play,” Harness said. For fans, however, one game in particular should stand out. “We are really looking for to playing Slippery Rock. Its always a great game.”
Griffin field hockey fans should know that they can come support their team any time. Harness said, “We love having fans all around us. Even if you don’t fully understand the game, this season should be an exciting season and the student body should come enjoy the weather and catch some great hockey.”
