The ’90s are Back

New episodes of “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” music playing through cassette players and pushing videotapes into the VCR, yes, let the nostalgia sit in, I’m talking about the 1990s. A decade that feels like it was just yesterday was fourteen years ago. When did we all get so old? The good news is that we don’t have to say our final goodbyes to that era. It’s coming back through fashion.

Have you noticed the emergence of the crop top? The crop top was a staple of the ‘90s. A heavy influence was Britney Spears’ tied up collared shirt in the “…Baby One More Time” music video. The trend of showing off some bare midriff has returned. Today the look has been modernized. Celebrities ranging from Rihanna to Selena Gomez can be seen on the red carpet rocking this trend.

The essential partner to the crop top was the high waisted bottom. A baggy high waisted jean paired with a thick leather belt is a classic ‘90s look. Denim was a major craze at the time. People wore denim on denim. Jean jackets, overalls, and denim mini skirts were all in style.

As a part of the grunge style, plaid and flannel was another staple in the ‘90s. Pieces of the edgy and rebellious fashion are finding their way to today’s mainstream culture.

World-renowned Beyoncé Knowles can be seen in her “***Flawless” music video wearing a red and black plaid flannel top, paired with jean shorts.

The major makeup accessory of the time was matte lipstick, specifically wine hued colors. Lipsticks have become a major trend once again. Artists like Rita Ora have revived the trend and can be seen on the models of makeup advertisements today.

If you want to incorporate some ‘90 trends into your style remember interpretation is important. In order to not appear to be wearing a costume, incorporate the trends in a subtle and personal way.
