‘Walk a Mile in Her Shoes’ event hopes to gain more participants

The 4th Annual “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” will take place on April 12 at 9 a.m. This year the walk will start at St. Clair Park.

“We had so many last year that we actually outgrew Lynch Field!” said Maureen Vissat, assistant professor of art.

In 2013, 650 people showed up for the walk.

“The football, lacrosse and wrestling teams all came out to participate in the event,” said Vissat. “This year, we’re hoping to have the marching band there as well.”

For the past three years, the SHU Feminist Collective has been creating and selling calendars. Each month has a picture of men from either sports teams or faculty wearing their heels. Calendars are $5 for students and $10 for faculty and staff.  All proceeds from these calendars are given to the Blackburn Center.

The Blackburn Center has been providing service to victims of both domestic and sexual violence in Westmoreland County since 1976. Their mission is to actively advocate for all people to live free from violence and also provide support for any survivors of all forms of domestic violence and sexual assault.

All services offered by the Blackburn Center are free and confidential.  More about the Blackburn Center and their mission can be found on their website at www.blackburncenter.org. A 24-hour hotline is also available for those who want to talk to a counselor.

If you are interested in participating in this year’s “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes,” you can register online at www.walkamileblackburn2014.eventbrite.com. It is $5 to register and you receive a t-shirt.

Gather a group of friends, grab your high heels or red sneakers, and walk to help end domestic and sexual violence.
