SHU Track and Field competes at the Coastal Carolina Invitational

The Seton Hill University Track and Field team opened their season in Myrtle Beach, SC. Over spring break, both men’s and women’s Track and Field team members had the option to compete at the Coastal Carolina invitational. “Overall there were probably around 15-20 teams at the meet, all at varying divisions and conferences,” said Peter Swain, a freshman mid-distance runner.

Other local teams that attended the meet at Coastal Carolina were from Slippery Rock, Liberty University, Westminster College, and West Liberty University. “There was no overall scoring of the meet, as in college Track and Field they typically do not score meets except for conference meets,” Swain said.

“Our team had a pretty good start to the outdoor season at Coastal Carolina,” said distance runner, Jackie Kleinschrodt. “Nichelle McMillan broke the long jump school record on the first day of the meet. Angela McCowin won the unseeded high jump, as well,” she said. “There were a lot of PSAC qualifying marks hit on the men and women sides,” said Kleinschrodt.

Spending spring break in Myrtle Beach was not only successful for PSAC qualifications and breaking school records, but was also beneficial for team bonding. “Getting away from campus as a team was a huge morale booster for the squad,” Swain said. “Having the opportunity to go down to Myrtle Beach gave us all time to get away from the hustle of being student-athletes and focus on just being athletes with a single goal of rising through the PSAC rankings,” he said.

“Since we spent so much time around each other, I felt that we all go tot one know another a little better,” said Christian Katic, a freshman long distance runner on the SHU Track and Field Team. The team shopped together at the Outlets, watched movies, played video games and Cards Against Humanity, and cooked together. “It was a good first experience for me as a freshman, and training outside at a nice facility as well as getting to bond with each other got us all pumped for outdoor track to start!” said Katic.
