The Seton Hill men’s baseball team had another successful season ending with a record of 40-18-0. They made it to the NCAA Regional but lost to East Stroudsburg with a final score of 3-0. Four members of the team were named to the ABCA/Rawlings All Atlantic Region Teams. These were first baseman Zac Heide and pitcher Perry DellaValle, who were named as first team selections. Matt Malacane and designated hitter Chris Miller, who were both second team selections, were also named. Heide is also an All-American and Miller a honorable mention All-American by the D2CCA.
In women’s softball, the Lady Griffs had a final record of 16-26-0. They ended their season with a doubleheader loss from Cal U. However, sophomore Ashley Perillo was named a Dino’s SHU player of the week. Perillo was 11-22 (.500) for the Griffins over their final six games of the year. She also helped keep the Griffins in the playoff race.
In men’s track and field, there were four top ten finishers at the PSAC Championship. Dontay Jacobs took third in the 400 meter dash, Derek DiAngelis took sixth in the pole vault, Patrick O’Connor took seventh in the high jump and Austin Sheridan took eighth in the discus throw. The men overall took 12th out of 14 teams.
For women’s track and field, freshman Ameriah Walters won the 200 meter dash and hit the provisional time. Chelsia Poole hit a provisional mark in the steeplechase and freshman Kelsey Plecenik took third in the pole vault. Jess Slagus took seventh in the javelin but hit a NCAA provisional mark. The women’s team took sixth overall.
As for the SHU Lax, the men’s team finished with a season record of 11-4, leaving them in a four-way tie for third place in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC). Although the Griffins just fell short from making the playoffs, seven players from the men’s team earned All ECAC honors. One of which was senior attacker, Zach Hartmann from British Columbia, Canada who led the way for the Griffins this past season receiving a first team selection and was selected to The 2016 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District™ Men’s At-Large Team. In addition to their success on the field, the Griffins men’s Lax team led all league institutions with 25 players earning a spot on the 2016 Division II Men’s Lacrosse All-Academic Team.
For the Lady Griffs, they started out their season with a 1-6 record, but progressed as their season went along, earning a playoff spot and finishing with a final record of 8-10. In what might have been her best season of her collegiate career, senior attacker Emily Fagan finished the season as a second team All American voted by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA). Also, senior midfielder Alessandra Nicholas was selected to compete in the 2016 Division II North/South Senior All-Star game that took place this past week.
The weekend of June 4-6, the wrestling team tried to make the University World Team. Jake Temple had success when he took seventh place in Greco – Roman, earning him All-American honors. He won three matches. In March, Joseph Alessandro became the first Griffin to wrestle in a national final. He lost the match but earned All-American honors in the 141 pound weight class with his second place finish.
After starting off the season at Slippery Rock as the Reserve High Point Team, the Seton Hill equestrian team finished second in the region this past March. Samantha Zajdel and Brooke Kulasa came home with Reserve High Point Rider, while seniors Hannah Brichacek, Maggie Carty, Nicolette Santercangelo and graduate assistant Taylor Jansen all showed this weekend in their final career IHSA conference show.
With the 2015-2016 spring sports seasons in the books, the fall sports await their turn to make an impact on their upcoming seasons.
