BREAKING: Shedding light on SHU power outage

Earlier this morning, an e-mail was sent out from Chris Sherman, computer & info tech
systems administrator at Seton Hill University (SHU), issuing a power outage on campus.

“At approximately 10:05 a.m. the West Penn transformer blew that feeds portions of TLC, Maura, Lowe/Canevin, St. Joseph’s, and the main kitchen,” said Sherman. “West Penn has been notified and estimates the repair time at 1:30 p.m. today.”

While the repair took place, power was shut off in many parts of the buildings mentioned. Internet was also dropped around 1:40 p.m. and has since been restored.

Bryan Kline, psychology adjunct professor, witnessed the transformer blow. “It was around 9:40 a.m. and I was walking from my car to the shuttle waiting area,” said Kline. “I heard two loud pops. I looked up and saw smoke and flames coming from the transformer. It sounded like two gun shots.”

Generators were placed in the kitchen so staff may still provide meals during the outage.
