Seton Hill University’s Student News Magazine Returns After Indefinite Hiatus

After a period of uncertainty, Seton Hill University’s student news magazine, Setonian, is back from an indefinite hiatus that stirred confusion and concern among the campus community. The hiatus, announced earlier this semester, was attributed to a lack of support for journalism and concerns over the publication’s editorial process and the role of faculty advisers in content moderation.

With new clarity regarding the editorial process and the role of faculty advisors, Setonian is now poised to return with renewed purpose. The drama surrounding the hiatus has sparked much-needed conversations about the importance of supporting student-led media and ensuring that future generations of journalists are equipped with the tools to succeed.

As Setonian resumes its operations, it stands as a reminder of the critical role student newspapers play in shaping both campus and societal discourse. The publication’s return marks not just the revival of a campus tradition but also a renewed commitment to upholding the values of free expression and student journalism at Seton Hill University.

While some responses from the community have been shared publicly, I felt it was necessary to emphasize the reactions from the Setonian staff and myself. On behalf of the staff, we are deeply grateful for the dialogue this situation has generated. Even before the publication’s return was confirmed, student publications across our community reached out in solidarity, affirming our shared right to voice and press. In these challenging times, our ability to think critically, creatively, and ethically drives us closer to the goal that Elizabeth Ann Seton envisioned for us all — to transform the world, starting with our own community.
