The Seton Hill University (SHU) men’s tennis team is about to start its fourth season here at the hill. This year’s team will be coached by Mark Bungo who is taking over for head coach Tim Creamer.
The team will be lead by senior Jason Pugh, who played a tremendous season in 2006, finishing with a 15-1 singles record. Another leader on this year’s team is junior Jasmin Sadikovic, who along with Pugh will make up the number one doubles team.
Returning with Pugh are seniors Nathan Augustine and Paul Crossman, along with junior Ian Love.
The team has also added five new players to their roster. These players include junior transfer Charles Brinkerhoff from Ghent, N.Y., and four freshman players, Adam Kensey and Justin Ryan from Indiana, Pa., Dave Cristello of Natrona Heights, Pa., and Ivan Pandulev of Haskovo, Bulgaria.
The tennis season has yet to begin, but practices have been in full swing as the team prepares for its first match of the season, which will be played away against Penn State Behrend on February 17. All of the team’s home matches will be played at the Greensburg Racquet Club, which can be found on Route 30 just past Westmoreland Mall.
According to Sadikovic, The team has yet to have a winning season, so that will be the team’s foremost goal. But we realize in order to get there we must take it one match at a time.
Sadikovic also stated that it would be a great honor for any member of the team to be chosen for all-conference.
Pugh agrees with Sadikovic and adds, We would like to stay strong as a team through out the entire season, seeing as we faltered a bit towards the end of last year.
That goal alone will be a hefty one seeing as the team has a schedule full of tough opponents.
Every match will be a tough challenge, with the exception of maybe two opponents, said Augustine.
Augustine also said that one of the team’s goals will be to win matches over Spring Break, during which they will be in Hilton Head, South Carolina to play in a tournament.
