In addition to bearing the stress that comes with being a senior in college, Seton Hill University’s (SHU) Autumn Himes is the President of the Chemistry Club, as well as a member of the SHU women’s basketball team.
“I keep everything straight by being organized and communicating with my professors, coaches, teammates, and chem club members. It’s not always a smooth process, but I try not to stress because in the end I always find time to get my work done, be on time for practice, work, and class,” said Himes.

In February, Himes was honored when she was named the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Association’s (WVIAC) Player of the Week. The women’s basketball team strives for the intensity that the WVIAC honors.
“I like to think that me as well as the rest of my teammates always play with a high level of intensity. Intensity is stressed a lot by our coaches at practice so it carries over into the games. For myself I knew my basketball career was coming to an end quickly and I wanted to go out on a good note, there is no second chance,” Himes said. That intensity has paid off, as the women’s basketball team has achieved some very important goals during Himes’ tenure with the team.
“One of the biggest accomplishments this year was beating Charleston at Charleston. We played them last year and they killed us 98 to 53; this year we beat them and it was completely unexpected,” said Himes. So how does the women’s basketball team prepare to play at such a high level?
“Some pre-game rituals for our whole team would be eating team meals, listening to music in the locker room and dancing together, it is fun and makes you less intense before a game,” said Himes. In addition to some big wins for the team, Himes also has her teammates to thank for helping her make such wonderful memories.
“I will never forget my teammates, even the ones I met as a freshman. We practice together, eat together, live together, play together, and hangout together. I can’t make it through a season of basketball because it is so long without my teammates. We started conditioning the third day of school and finished February 23rd, working through the holiday breaks. All the inside jokes and fun times I have with my teammates, especially the other seniors, I will always remember,” said Himes. So what does Himes say about the future of SHU women’s basketball?
“I have truly enjoyed playing basketball here at Seton Hill, as well as earning a valuable education. I wish the best for the younger girls during the rest of their time playing, and I want everyone, not just the basketball team, to know that it goes fast, so enjoy it while you can,” said Himes.
