Time to Layer Up

As the weeks go by it has been getting colder here on the Hill. Winter will be here before we know it. Winter fashion is all about looking chic and most importantly staying warm. The key to winter fashion for college students is maintaining the essentials.

First you must have a dependable collection of pieces for layering. When done correctly layering produces endless possibilities. One primary layering piece is the thermal sweater. Solid toned thermals can be paired with any other top for extra warmth. The waffle knit of the fabric traps in heat and is great for those really cold days.

The most obvious layering piece is sweaters. There are different types of sweaters available. A nice thick chunky sweater is always great for comfort. They feel like a snuggly hug. For great warmth you can invest in a cashmere sweater. Another great top layer is a button down chambray shirt. It’s great for pairing because it easily matches other items.

These pieces can be paired with thin long sleeve t-shirts, tank tops, hoodies, vests and jackets. Don’t be afraid to layer more than one jacket for an extra source of heat. On your bottom half to stay warm you can wear leggings and thick tights under jeans, skirts and dresses. A sweater dress is a great way to escape the pattern of only wearing pants.

In order to standout choose a fun winter coat. Since you are going to be wearing it almost every day make sure you pick one that not only keeps you warm but also makes you happy. For more touches of your personality wear printed scarves. A nice scarf can automatically upgrade any outfit.

If you’re a student who likes to follow the fashion trends of the season three trending pieces are over-the-knee boots, turtlenecks, and knit beanies. Over-the-knee boots instantly give you confidence and keep you legs extra toasty. Turtlenecks are another layer piece but it is more noticeable and fashion forward. Knit beanies are great to wear on your way to class or even a party. Their versatility is what makes them so stylish.

  1. Hi, I’m Victoria Mull, Editor-In-Chief of the Setonian 1989-1990. I’ve recently subscribed to the updates and I have to say BRAVO!!!. As an alum, I have found your posts extremely informative and in general helpful. Your review of the latest Apple Ipad was terrific. I am now a private music teacher who is trying to keep up with technology for my own use with teaching and all the other daily needs. I worked on the Setonian just prior to switching over to the desk top format and I even purchased my first Mac the year after I graduated because I stayed in touch with the “Setonian.” I have recently started writing again for a local publication, “The Lzaurel Mountain Post.”
Best wishes and thank you for remaining an informative voice for your campus, the community on and off “The Hill.”
