“KEEP CALM and WEAR PURPLE”
Purple, the color which is made from the mixture of energetic red and peaceful blue. It is the color that enhances your creativity and loyalty, and it is the color that represents your awareness of Relay For Life.
Seton Hill University (SHU) will be hosting a Relay For Life event on March 1, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at McKenna Gym. It’s open to the public, no registration or fee. Relay For Life is a nationwide charity event, which celebrates the people who fight or fought with cancer. At SHU, it is a student group project.
“It’s going well. My professor, Dr. Zullo came up the idea and our class has been in charge of that for the past seven weeks, preparing for it and getting everything in my mind for and ready to go,” said Miranda Peto, a student of Strategic Leadership in sports business. “There is actually one being held in Greensburg this summer. We want to promote that big event by having mini event.”
The purpose of this event is to raise money for cancer research. SHU students, clubs and teams will support the event by hosting different activities such as balloon popping, a guess-how-many game and face painting in their booths.
“I think that’s a good cause and more people should be participating in it,” said Chuck Horsley, a freshman sports management major. “I’m participating in exactly raising money and having people donate to pay respect to their loved ones with cancer, battling cancer (or) who had cancer or sadly passed away from cancer.”
SHU holds Relay For Life this year for the first time. “I myself participated at Relay For Life in high school. So I’m excited to bring the event here because I think it’s an amazing opportunity for everyone to be a part of and it’s really fun environment and it gives back to cancer patients,” said Peto.
“This is one of my favorite volunteer activities, because I personally my uncle passed away from pancreatic cancer sadly about eight or nine years ago. So I’m glad such as in organization that cares about people,” said Horsley. ”It’s rewarding because if we find the cure for cancer, we can save a lot of people.”
In more than 5,200 communities and 20 countries, Relay For Life events comprise the signature fundraiser for the American Cancer Society according to the American Cancer Society Website.
