So many bands come along in one’s lifetime that it’s hard to put a finger on what’s good or bad, but the Brian Jonestown Massacre stands out from the rest. On March 30, at the Rex Theater in Pittsburgh, Brian Jonestown lit up the stage.
Brian Jonestown got their name from the original guitarist of the Rolling Stones: Brian Jones. The Brian Jonestown have a psychedelic rock sound that falls into the shoegazer genre.
The band is comprised of Anton Newcombe (singer/guitarist), Matt Hollywood (bassist), Dean Taylor (guitarist), Mara Keagal (organist), and Brian Glaze (drummer). They have gone through many different members in the band’s lifetime.
The Brian Jonestown Massacre has an array of albums to choose from. With titles like Thank God for Mental Illness, Their Satanic Majesties Second Request, Bringing it All Back Home-Again, and many others, fans of the band cannot be more than pleased as each album carries its own unique sound. They are also showcased on a DVD, “Dig!”, a documentary that follows the Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Dandy Warhols.
The Brian Jonestown Massacre’s unique sound can be compared to The Jefferson Airplane, The Rolling Stones, and Sonic Youth.
The crowd was filled with young and old people alike. As each band member took the stage, I felt a burst of unrecognized energy pulsate through me. As they kicked into their first song, the crowd started bobbing their heads up and down. They didn’t need to perform an encore due to the 10:45 p.m. Pittsburgh curfew. Two hours later, I left feeling fulfilled and partially deaf. I walked up Carson Street to my car with the sounds of
The Brian Jonestown humming hauntingly in my head. It was definitely a good night shared by all.
