Griffins ready to soar into fall season

The fall sports are right around the corner as the Seton Hill University Griffins are preparing for the 2019-20 season. The women’s soccer team started out their season 0-2. The SHU football team will kickoff their first game at home on Sept. 14 against East Stroudsburg University. The women’s golf team came in 13th place in their first match. Photos from SHU Athletics.

While things are finally settling into place for the fall semester, the SHU Griffins are already preparing for the upcoming 2019-20 athletic season. 

For the second consecutive season, the women’s volleyball team was selected to finish first in the PSAC Southwest Division in the 2019 PSAC Preseason Volleyball Poll. The Griffins made their fifth PSAC Tournament appearance in and qualified for their fourth NCAA Atlantic Regional appearance in 2018. The women’s volleyball team will start the season on Sept. 6-7 at the Ferris State Tournament. 

The SHU equestrian team finished fifth overall in the Zone 2 Championships in Pittsford, Ny. at Lehman Farms in April of 2018. The team’s first meet is Sept. 26 at the West Virginia University Meet. The first home meet is Oct. 6 at Bloomfield Stables. 

After finishing 1-10 in the 2018 season, the Griffins football team have been selected to finish eighth in the 2019 PSAC West Preseason Coaches Poll. With the return of head coach Daniel Day, the Griffins are looking for a more victorious season. The Griffins will start their season at home on Sept. 14 against East Stroudsburg University at 2 p.m.  

The men’s cross country team has been selected to finish 11th in the PSAC this fall by the 2019 PSAC Preseason Coaches Poll while the women’s team has been selected to finish fourth in the PSAC Preseason Poll. 

The men’s team tied their highest placing with an 11th place finish in the PSAC Championships. The women’s team finished with a fourth place finish in the PSAC Championships in 2018. Both the men and women’s teams will had their first meets on Sept. 7 at the Doug Watts Open in Edinboro, Pa., where the men finished fifth and the women finished first.

The SHU women’s golf team is down to eight women on the roster for the 2019-20 season. Last fall, the team finished eighth with a team score of 1,077 at the PSAC Championships. Their first match was held Sept. 6-7 at Evan Parker Memorial in North East, Pa against MercyHurst University. The griffins finished in 13th place.

The Seton Hill University women’s equestrian team will have their first meet n Sept. 26 at the West Virginia University Meet. The first home meet for the equestrian team is on Oct. 6 at Bloomfield stables. The men’s soccer team started off their season 2-0, with a 3-1 win over Wheeling Jesuit University and a 2-0 win over West Virginia Wesleyan College. Photos from SHU Athletics.

The women’s field hockey team finished the 2018 season with a record of 0-18. The Griffins have been selected 11th place in the PSAC Field Hockey Preseason Coaches Poll. The team is looking for more success when they host their first home game against MercyHurst University on Sept. 11 at 4 p.m. 

After finishing the 2018 regular season with a record of 7-5-7 and a record of 4-2-4 in PSAC play, the men’s soccer team has been picked to finish third in the West in the 2019 PSAC Preseason Poll. The 2019 season will be the first time the PSAC will split the men’s soccer teams into two divisions. The team will hosted their first game on home turf on Sept. 5 against Wheeling Jesuit University at 4 p.m. with a win of 3-1. 

The women’s soccer team finished with a record of 12-5-1 during the 2018 regular season and a record of 11-4-1 in PSAC play. The team has been selected to finish third in the West in the 2019 PSAC Preseason Poll. The women’s soccer teams will also be split into two divisions for the first time ever. The Griffins finished fifth in the regular season in the PSAC standings which advanced them to the PSAC tournament for the second consecutive season. The women’s team first game was on Sept. 5 at Concord University at 4 p.m. with a loss of 0-1.

The SHU women’s tennis team finished with a record of 7-10 during the 2018 regular season and a record of 4-4 in PSAC action. The Griffins won three out of six singles matches for 4-3 win over California University in the season finale. The team will host their first match against Daemen College on Sept. 22 at 1 p.m.
