Seton Hill University’s (SHU) Relay for Life organization is taking part in the men’s and women’s basketball games on Saturday, Feb. 11 against California University of Pennsylvania (Cal U). All attendees are encouraged to wear purple or pink to support the fight against cancer.
Students in Robert Zullo’s Strategic Leadership in Sports graduate class have organized SHU’s Relay for Life this year and will have a table in McKenna Center for donations and purchasing luminaries at the games. They will also have a hospitality room and a 50/50 raffle, and students will receive a free megaphone while supplies last.
“We chose the SHU versus Cal U game because it is a local rival and we want to also spread awareness to the surrounding and local community,” said Dilveer Chaggar, a student in Zullo’s class. “Cancer affects everyone and we are trying to spread our reach with regards to our message.”
This is the fourth year SHU has been involved with Relay for Life, which is a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. The actual event will be held on Friday, Feb. 17 at 7:30 p.m. in McKenna Center.
“I would encourage the Seton Hill community and also the further community to attend both the games and the actual Relay for Life events throughout the week because it is a fantastic cause,” Chaggar said. “Cancer never sleeps and our fight against cancer should never sleep.”
The women’s basketball team will also recognize their seniors before their game at 1 p.m. on Saturday, with the men’s game following at 3 p.m. Both teams lost earlier matchups with Cal U on Jan. 14.
“We know they can beat us, but we also know we can beat them,” said Noah Davis, captain of the men’s basketball team. “We did not have our second leading scorer (Nathan Davis) that game, so that will definitely help this Saturday.”
The women enter tomorrow’s game with a record of 14-10 overall and 10-8 in conference play, and the men with a record of 11-11 overall and 8-10 in conference play.
“We are on a three-game win streak right now and want to push that as far as it can go,” Davis said. “One or two more wins will likely guarantee our playoff spot.”
