Highlights in SHU Sports

  • Seton Hill University (SHU) won the WVIAC Presidential Cup for the 2012-2013 athletic season. Both the men and women’s track teams won championships and the baseball team won the North Division title. Second places were taken by volleyball and women’s cross country this season as well. SHU also took third place overall in the WVIAC Commissioner’s Cup. First place was taken by West Virginia Wesleyan.

  • Sophomore three time All American baseball player Nick Sell came in 4th place of those nominated for the Tino Martinez award after voting. Sell had a hitting percentage of .431, a slugging percentage of .731 and a on-base percentage .521.Tino Martinez award winners are considered to be the most outstanding player in Division II baseball. Of the five athletes nominates, Sonoma State’s senior pitcher Harmen Sidhu won the 2013 award.

  • SHU women’s basketball coach of 8 years  Ferne Labati  announced her retirement June 6. Labati’s record at SHU was 117-73 and 556-399 overall . According to a SHU press release, she won her 500th game during the 2009-2010 season and was named the WVIAC Coach of the Year following the 2010-2011 season.

  • Sophomore Mallory Sanner earned the WIVIAC Field Athlete of the Year award. Teammate and sophomore Jeannie Bujdos was named Track Athlete of the Year as well. The two join three other SHU track and field athletes to be named Track or Field Athlete of the Year Awards.

  • Left handed Pitcher Alex Haines was drafted by the Colorado Rockies. He was selected as the third pick in the 33 round of the 2013 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft.
